Nama Sankeertanam
About Course
Nama Sankeerthanam, also known as Sampradaya Bhajanai or Dakshina Bharata Sampradaya Bhajan, is a time-honored tradition of devotional singing rooted in South India. It is a sacred musical offering—a structured sequence of songs that glorify the divine through the names of God and praises of saints and gurus. This tradition was popularized nearly 300 years ago by saints like Sri Bhodendra Saraswati, Sri Sridhara Ayyaval, and Marudanallur Sadguru Swamigal, and later systematized by Gopalakrishna Bhagavatar.
Originally introduced to Tamil Nadu during the Maratha rule in Thanjavur, this community singing tradition draws from spiritual compositions of great saints such as Annamacharya, Jayadeva, Purandara Dasa, and Gopalakrishna Bharati. The upcoming learning series will begin with Thodaya Mangalam, a gentle and devotional invocation that sets the tone for the entire bhajan paddhati.
Importantly, no prior musical training is needed. What matters most is bhakti (devotion) and the commitment to learn. Nama Sankeerthanam is not just music—it is spiritual sadhana, transforming hearts through the divine name.
